Cricket rules

Cricket is a bat-and-ball sport that is played between two teams of eleven players on a field that has a wicket at each end made up of two bails balanced on three stumps. The pitch measures 22 yards (20 meters) in length. When a member of the fielding team, known as the bowler, "bowls" (propels) the ball from one end of the pitch towards the wicket at the other end, play is declared to have begun. One player from the batting side is positioned at each end of the field, facing away from the bowler with the intent of hitting the ball with a bat.

When the bowler unfairly bowls the ball to either side of the wicket or the ball is struck by the bat and travels to the field boundary, the batting side scores runs. The goal of the fielding side is to stop runs from being scored and dismiss every player (so that they are "out" and are said to have "lost their wicket"). Being bowled, having the ball strike the stumps and knock the bails off, and having the fielding side catch the ball after it has been struck by the bat but before it reaches the ground are all ways to be dismissed. The innings ends and the teams switch roles when ten batsmen have been removed.

A third umpire and a match referee assist two umpires in most forms of cricket, and three umpires are used in international matches. When one side has scored more runs than the other after their innings, or if the team batting last has had its innings prematurely ended, the game is over.
